Indiana Fever Boss Sends Serious Caitlin Clark Message To WNBA Free Agents

The Indiana Fever’s fortunes are turning around, thanks in large part to their young stars. Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston’s arrival turned Indy from a perennial cellar-dweller to a serious playoff contender.

During the 2023 season, the Fever held a 6-19 record before August rolled around. This year, they finished the first half of the season with 11 wins and 15 losses, good for seventh in the league. They are well-positioned to make the playoffs after two years of having one of the worst records in the league.

Fever general manager Lin Dunn is hoping to use this run as a springboard for their pitch to free agents. In an interview with Howard Megdal of The Next Hoops, Dunn said that their top stars will be the primary focus of their free agency campaign.

“It’s an exciting time,” Dunn shared. “Do you want to play with Aliyah Boston? Do you want to play with Caitlin Clark?”

Dunn also raved about Clark’s All-Star Game performance, praising her passing in particular. The Fever rookie set a record for most assists by a first-year player in the game with 10 dimes.

“Didn’t that send a message how skilled and how talented and how tough she is?” Dunn said, talking about Clark’s All-Star Game appearance. “Not only is she out there on the court as a rookie but she’s playing against our Olympic team, the best in the world. And what did she have, 10 assists?”

Clark’s passing has been one of her best weapons in her young WNBA career. It took a while to gel with her Fever teammates, but the rookie excelled in finding the open woman on the court. Before the WNBA took a break, she set the league record for most assists in a game with 19, against the New York Liberty last July 6.

Great passers tend to lure great players to join them. Everyone wants to play with a bona fide distributor, after all. The Fever are hoping that Clark and Boston’s talents will allow them to recruit more top stars.
